The Life of Alien (one approach)

The Life of Alien (one approach)

I can assure to you that it is the truth. A time before there existed a man, there was a strange man. Maybe he is still alive, but it does not matter. The fact was that he could not identify himself with any place he was in. Whether it was his house, his work place, his school, the sidewalks of the streets or the streets themselves, all places seemed strange to him.  The places were not responsible for this. In spite of the fact they were so beautiful, he felt strange in them. He felt like a foreigner in all the places he visited. The problem was he could not recognize himself in any place. “It is”, he thought, “because I do not belong anywhere”. The reader must be thinking by now that he was a crazy man, but I am not quite sure about it, because he used to be a respectful person, he used to help people in trouble and he was a polite man too. Thus, at the first sight, he did not look like an insane person. I think neither people nor madness were the cause of his feeling.

On the other hand, he used to be a lonely person. Despite of the fact he used to be an easygoing man, he could not stand staying with people for long periods. If he talked to somebody for many hours, then he used to stammer. He was not able to find neither the right words nor clever expressions to continue with the conversation. Many times he met people who, at the beginning, found something interesting in him, however, a few hours, days or months later, people used to let him down because he was not interesting any more. As a result, I did not meet any of this man’s close friends, just me, if I could be labeled that way.

Because of this and other similar situations, this man was “all in a fog”. At this point, the reader might think this man’s only refuge was himself, the dialogue with his consciousness. However, his consciousness was not a refuge (I know it very well). He knew that consciousness was not able to apprehend reality. That is to say, thinking about a Pegasus, does not imply Pegasus exists. “Intelligence only offers a little orientation to move in the experience, but the experience, itself, leads to idiocy” – he thought. So, although he was a gifted man, he was not able to find satisfaction (happiness) in his actions, nor in his thoughts or his daily life.  He felt like a foreigner to his consciousness. Therefore, his life developed in a deep melancholy and sadness, but not depression. This was a clinical concept and he was against psychiatry and drugs.  He used to tell himself: “I am not sick. My matter has to do with the way of feeling: I feel that I am part of nothing. As a result, I feel like a foreigner with respect to places, people and myself. The feeling of foreignness rules my life and I have only one solution…”

It was the last phrase I heard from him. Either maybe that kind of life or conception of life turned him right into his grave or maybe it was a possibility to run away from his feeling, to get the salvation. I do not really know what happened to him. It is or it was his life, the life of Alius*, it is not mine. I am just an Alien.

* 'Alius' in Latin means 'the other'.
